November Issue
We have had an exciting first half year in the Hilton Head Plantation Yacht Club, HHP’s premiere boating club. Our adventures have taken us to St. Phillips Island, Pinckney Island, a shrimp trawl, and most recently to the coastal islands of Georgia and to Florida. We have enjoyed presentations by the Coast Guard Auxiliary, exploring the history of that august institution, and about the Lowcountry and the wonderful area in which we live. We have more events planned (check out upcoming events at HHPYC.org) and come see the places we will go.
Our cruise to Jekyll Island, Fernandina Beach, and points in between was a delight! Although we did not have as many participants as we had hoped, those who attended enjoyed beautiful scenery, good food, and great companionship. En route south, we (three boats) anchored in Walburg Creek behind St. Catherine’s Island and explored the beaches on the north end, admiring the regrowth of the understory following the devastating fires on that Island. In Jekyll, we were joined by “land cruisers” and enjoyed biking, golf cart tours, and meals ashore before continuing on to Fernandina Beach. Although the weather there was overcast and cloudy, we had no rain to speak of, were able to explore the town (dodging the GA/FL fans who had descended for the weekend), and enjoyed some wonderful dinners out (French and Spanish). The return trip took us to different anchorages along the ICW, where we enjoyed multiple pods of dolphin, a myriad of sea birds, and fields of Spartina Grass lying golden in the waters. We try to plan trips so they can be enjoyed by boaters and non-boaters alike, and we will make more of an effort to involve social members going forward.
The success of any club depends on its volunteers, and we have some great ones. We would like to thank our leaders who have organized or chaired recent events: Sandy Silber, Bill Peery, Ralph Noonan, Sebastian DeAngelis, and many others behind the scenes.
HHPYC always is open for suggestions for future boat trips, lectures, and social events. If you have any excursions in mind or would like to share or lead us to a special boating spot, please email Commodore@hhpyc.org.
Consider joining HHPYC and take an adventure with us! Begin your trip by exploring our website at HHPYC.org. All residents of HHP may join the Club. Social memberships are available for non boat owners. Contact Membership officer Malcolm Maclennan: Membership@hhpyc.org
